ABOUT FLORIST BOWS

A florist bow is quite versatile. It adds pizazz to flower arrangements, gifts, homecoming mums, weddings and holiday decors. It can be used tastfully to emphasize a specific color or scheme for almost every occasion.

Unlike a simple bow, a florist bow has a variety of loop sizes. The outer loops are usually larger whereas the loops are much smaller toward the center of the bow. While the most common florist bows usually feature 4 to 10 round or oval loops, a designer can take it up to 18 loops or more for fancier presentation.

BASIC CREATION

When you make the first loop, you must leave enough ribbon to create one tail end. You then take the other end making a smaller loop, and then the bigger loops.

It is crucial to make sure both ends of the ribbon are about the same length. After you have made enough loops, you can secure the bow with a suitable size wire to keet its shape.

You can then cut the tail ends into points to finish the bow. If you need to ship your gifts, then use ribbon with wire edging. This type of ribbon keeps its shape during transport.

USING THE CORRECT RIBBONS

Florist ribbon is a hard ribbon made in several colors, and often used by florists in floral designs. You can choose to use florist ribbon for creating a florist bow, but you can also use other types of 'softer' fabric ribbon.

When deciding for the correct type of ribbon for your florist bow, it's important that you know what color you are looking for. It is advised you bring in a sample of the fabric or color sample you are trying to match the ribbon to. Secondly, focus on the overall design of your creation and the effect you are trying to create. Thirdly, if you are doing a big job, like as a weding you should make sure to purchase sufficient quantity so that you dont run out along the way. Likewise, it can be a comfort to check with the store on its stock position.

Ribbons come in different properties. Be fully aware of the type of ribbon you buy, especially when tying your bow. Ribbon sizes range from small to large. The material can be lace, velvet, cotton, satin or nylon. You can buy a ribbon with sealed edges, so it won't fray and ribbons also can be single- or double-sided, or shiny on one side.

WHERE TO FIND RIBBONS

Ribbons are commonly available at many craft stores, dollar stores, big-box retailers and specialty stationery shops. Some specialty retailers sell ribbons in large quantities with a discount. To save you time, you may want to look for ready-made florist bows in packs although the designs and color schemes are limited.

Lastly if you choose to buy online, do ask for a sample especially if color coordination is crucial in your presentation.

Red wines will put their best foot forward when poured into and sipped out of a wine glass with adequate room. A distinctly oval or egg-shaped bowl that narrows slightly at the top as opposed to a slender flute-like glass is necessary to enjoy a red wine to the fullest . The ideal red wine glass will accommodate between 10-22 ounces of liquid, allowing more room to swirl your wine and better surface area for allowing the wine to breathe a bit. On the serving note, keep in mind that most red wines are at their best when serving temperatures are between 60-65 degrees Farenheit – serve them too warm and the taste of alcohol is overly evident, serve them too cold and they will quickly veer towards bitter and more astringent on the palate.
Why are red wines red? Why do bigger glasses work better for serving red wines and what is the difference between a light-bodied red wine and a full-bodied red wine? It's color can be derived from a vast assortment of grape varietal grapes that are reddish, deep purple, and even a beautiful blue on the color scale. These grapes give rise to a wine that is color classified with descriptors as garnet, dark red, almost black, light red, ruby red, opaque purple, deep violet, maroon and the list goes on and on. The grapeskins are responsible for the distinct color spectrum of red wine. The individual wine’s particular red hue depends on the type of grape used in the process and the length of time the skin’s pigmentation is in contact with juice. There are around 50 key red wine varieties that is available in today’s worldwide wine market.

How to choose a wine that tastes good.
Most people have been absolutely overwhelmed and intimidated by the sheer variety and number of wine selections in the market. The choices among wine varieties, brands, labels, and prices seem almost infinite. Problem is: there are just too many choices. So how to make a good wine choice?
In a few words, discover your own preference for wine taste.
Many people know when they like a wine after they have tasted it. The difficult part is understanding why you like it, and how do you describe what it is that you like about that wine. Is it full bodied or light or? Is it tannic or not? Is it sweet or fruity? Do sweet and fruity refer to the same thing? The questions go on.
All these questions can easily be answered through tasting wines and more wine! Again, tasting in itself is not enough as you must pay great attention to what you are tasting. Take for example the Chardonnay grape. It is grown in the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria and also in Margaret River, Western Australia. Although they are both made from Chardonnay grapes but when tasted side by side, you may first think that both Chardonnay's have little in common.
When you taste a wine of the same variety side-by-side, you can easily begin to learn the differences between a full bodied and a light bodied wine; and a low tannin wine and a high tannin wine, etc.
Tips on how to choose a wine that is right for you.
Try to narrow down your choices and give you some directions. Firstly, decide whether you want a white wine or red wine or if you want a sparkling wine, dessert wine or fortified wine.
Secondly, think about your own preferences for the taste of a wine. As a minimum, decide whether you prefer a dry or sweet wine, dry is the term used to describe the absence of sweetness in a wine. (Use your knowledge from your comparative wine tastings to help you.)
If you know your preferences for other wine characteristics, then it will also be a good idea to decide on these. If you don't know then I have included a short description here to help you in your comparative wine tastings.
1. Short Palate verses Long Palate: The "length" of a wine is the amount of time the sensations of taste and aroma persist after swallowing. The longer the better.
2. Low Tannins verses High Tannins: Do understand that Tannins are a vital ingredient in wines, especially red wines. It comes from the stalks, skins and pips of grapes. Tannins in a young wine produce a bitter, puckering taste on the palate.
3. Low Acid verses High Acid: Various types of acids are present in wine, and are essential to the wine's longevity and also to your enjoyment. Too little can affect the wine's quality and too much can spoil the wine. A higher acidity makes the wine more tart and sour tasting; whereas a low acidity results in flat tasting wine that is more susceptible to spoilage. Acidity is that quality that makes your mouth water and your lips pucker, and without it, wines taste pretty flat and one dimensional. When acidity is present in the right quantities, it is the element that makes all of the other flavors in the wine stand out, including the undertones of fruit, spice and herbs. The flavor in wine that you would describe as tangy, sharp, refreshing, bracing, bright, crisp or zingy is the acidity.
4. Light bodied verses full bodied: To get a picture of the differences between a light-bodied wine and a full-bodied wine think about milk as an analogy. Light-bodied is analogous to skim milk and full-bodied wine analogous to full-cream milk, and the variations in the "body" of wine are like varying levels of fat-content in milk.
What makes it even easier, is that a wine’s body is directly proportional to its alcohol content. On every wine label you’ll notice a percentage of alcohol by volume.
Wines may be stored in oak barrels, usually to impart extra and more complex flavors. American, French and German oak barrels are widely used in Australia. Oaky describes the aroma or taste quality imparted to a wine by the oak barrels in which it was aged.
Storage and care of wines are very important, e.g. buying direct from the winery's cellar door is a good option. Extreme heat or cold, direct sunlight, and dramatic temperature fluctuations are bad for wine. Therefore, before you buy any wine, make sure the wine is filled up to the neck of the bottle, the cork is not pushing out of the bottle, and there are no signs of leakage.
When you buy wine you want to buy wines that taste good to you. Just because a merchant, friend or wine writer says a wine is good doesn't mean you'll like it. The only judge of good taste in wine is you yourself.
